Over hundred participants in a non-violent civil disobedience action in the Tchernobyl memorial day action: police pepper sprayed YLE journalist Hanna Hantula, all works at the Fennovoima-Rosatom construction site stopped.
According to police representative 40 people are taking part to the l disobedience action at the Fennovoima-Rosatom construction site. The organizers of the Reclaim The Cape action week, and some media representatives say the number of all participants is even over one hundred. The big action day of Reclaim The Cape action week has gathered various critics and opponents of Fennovoima’s and Rosatom’s nuclear power plant project from all over Finland and several other countries to the Hanhikivi Cape in Pyhäjoki.
40-50 activists participating in a non-violent civil disobedience action were walking on road connecting road towards the gates of the construction site. The parade was soon met by the police and riot police units, attempting to prevent the parade going forward. The demonstration was finally stopped at the bridge just before the gates of the construction site by riot police line. One demonstrator managed to pass through the police lines towards the site, and the others formed a stationary road block by sitting and standing on the bridge, refusing to leave.
– Police still remains calm and is trying to verbally force us to leave, but I’m afraid that soon they will start applying harder means, says Saila from the spot. He doesn’t want to tell her surname.
Meanwhile groups of various sizes entered the construction site by going over or through the fence surrounding it. They have climbed on top of at least two heavy machines and stopped them from working. Some activists climbed on the walls and roofs of the barracks of Destia. Several fireworks were also launched at the nuclear power plant construction site. According to us nine people have been caught within the fences by the police so far. The police has sprayed one of them with OC gas inside a police van. Police has also gassed YLE reporter Hanna Hantula on duty at the blockade.
The organizers of Reclaim the Cape action week say the participation has been even higher than expected.
– Finns are in general a bit timid in expressing even their steady opinions in practice. Obviously the nuclear power plant project of Fennovoima and Russian Rosatom has passed the limits of tolerance of quite many and created so much frustration, that it has positively got people off their couches, estimates Venla Simonen from the media team of the action week.
